If you have been to a LASIK consultation in Mumbai, you have probably been offered "Contoura Vision" alongside standard or Femto LASIK, usually at a higher price. Is it better, or just more expensive? It depends on your cornea.
First, the terms
Femto LASIK (bladeless LASIK): a femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap, then an excimer laser reshapes the cornea to correct your glasses power.
Contoura Vision (topography-guided LASIK): the same flap-and-laser process, but the treatment is planned using a detailed map of your cornea. It aims to correct small irregularities in the corneal surface, not just your spectacle number.
So Contoura is not a different surgery. It is a different way of planning the laser treatment.
Who benefits most from Contoura
Contoura's extra mapping tends to add the most value when your corneal topography shows:
- irregular astigmatism or asymmetry
- small surface irregularities that standard treatment would not address
- higher-order aberrations linked to night-vision complaints such as glare or halos.
If your cornea is regular and your prescription is straightforward, Femto LASIK may give a very similar result at a lower cost. The honest answer comes from your topography scan, not from a brochure. Ask the surgeon to show you your map and explain why Contoura would or would not change the result for you.
Cost in Mumbai
LASIK in Mumbai, across all techniques, is indicatively ₹40,000–₹1,20,000 for both eyes. Contoura usually sits towards the higher end, Femto LASIK lower down. The final figure depends on the hospital, the laser platform and what is included.
When comparing quotes, make sure each one states:
- the exact procedure (Femto, Contoura or SMILE)
- both-eye price
- pre-op tests included (topography, pachymetry, dry-eye tests)
- medicines and the number of follow-ups
- the enhancement (touch-up) policy.
What about SMILE?
SMILE is a flapless procedure that removes a small lenticule through a tiny incision. It is not designed to correct corneal irregularities the way Contoura can, but some people prefer it for contact sports or dryness considerations. If your cornea is regular and your prescription is in range, ask whether SMILE is also an option.

Questions to ask at your consultation
- What does my topography show? Is my cornea regular or irregular?
- Would Contoura change my expected result compared with Femto LASIK?
- Am I eligible for SMILE, and would you recommend it?
- What is my corneal thickness, and is there an adequate safety margin?
- Do I have dry eye, and should it be treated first?
- What is included in the price, and what is the enhancement policy?
A good centre will be comfortable telling you that the cheaper option suits you, if it does.
Insurance and EMI
Most retail health policies treat LASIK as cosmetic. Some cover it above a certain dioptre threshold, and some corporate group policies cover it. Check your policy wording, or ask us to check it for you. EMI options may be available at partner hospitals, subject to approval.

Clear answers
Questions families ask
Is Contoura better than LASIK?
Contoura is a type of LASIK. It may give better results when your cornea has irregularities. For regular corneas, Femto LASIK may give a similar result.
Is Contoura Vision painful?
Like other LASIK, it is done with numbing drops. Most people feel pressure rather than pain, and some discomfort for a few hours afterwards.
How long does Contoura recovery take?
Similar to Femto LASIK. Many people return to screen work within a few days, and vision continues to settle over weeks.
Is Contoura covered by insurance?
Usually not under retail policies, but some corporate policies cover refractive surgery above a dioptre threshold.
