SMILE vs LASIK vs ICL in Delhi NCR: Which Option Suits High Power?

    Quick answer

Which is better for high power: SMILE, LASIK or ICL?

It depends on corneal thickness and shape. Laser (LASIK/SMILE) removes corneal tissue, so with high power and a thinner cornea, ICL, a lens placed inside the eye, is often safer. Topography, pachymetry and, for ICL, chamber depth and endothelial count decide.

    Key facts

    • Cost: ₹40,000–₹1,20,000 for both eyes; technique and inclusions affect the quote. ICL needs a separate estimate.
    • Insurance: LASIK/ICL cover depends on policy clauses, often linked to minimum power; documents are reviewed and eligibility confirmed before surgery.
    • Recovery: Recovery time depends on the procedure and your health; your treating team gives a personal plan.
    • Coordination: Wekure Health coordinates care; eye surgeons at NABH-accredited partner hospitals perform surgery.

High glasses power? How LASIK, SMILE and ICL compare on eligibility, corneal thickness, recovery and cost in Delhi NCR, and which tests decide.

    Read the guide

If your glasses power is high, say −7 or beyond, or your corneas are on the thinner side, you may have been told that "normal LASIK" isn't ideal. That is not a dead end. It usually means the choice moves between SMILE, LASIK variants and ICL. Here is how they compare, and what decides which one is right.

Why high power changes the choice

Laser procedures (LASIK and SMILE) correct power by removing corneal tissue. The higher the power, the more tissue must be removed. Every cornea needs a safe amount of tissue left behind, so:

    • with high power and a thick cornea, laser may still be possible
    • with high power and a thinner cornea, removing that much tissue may be unsafe, and ICL becomes the safer option
    • corneal shape matters too: an irregular or keratoconus-suspect cornea needs very careful evaluation, and may rule out laser entirely.

    The tests that decide

A proper refractive work-up in Delhi NCR should include:

    • corneal topography/tomography (shape and regularity)
    • pachymetry (corneal thickness)
    • refraction over time, to confirm the power is stable
    • dry-eye assessment
    • for ICL: anterior chamber depth and endothelial cell count, to ensure there is space for the lens and the inner cornea is healthy.

If a centre recommends a procedure before these tests are done, ask why.

    Cost in Delhi NCR

LASIK and SMILE: indicatively ₹40,000–₹1,20,000 for both eyes, depending on the technique, the platform and the inclusions.

ICL: usually priced separately, because the lens is a major part of the cost. Toric ICLs (for astigmatism) cost more. Ask for a written, itemised both-eye estimate after your assessment.

    Delhi NCR considerations

Pollution season: dry eye and irritation can be worse from late October to January. Discuss timing and eye protection with your surgeon. See our guide to LASIK and cataract surgery in pollution season.

Follow-ups: next-day and later reviews are essential. With traffic between Gurugram, Noida and Delhi, choose a centre that's practical to reach.

Corporate cover: some corporate group policies in Gurugram and Noida cover refractive surgery above a dioptre threshold. Check your policy.

    Questions to ask your surgeon

    1. What are my corneal thickness and topography results?
    2. Am I eligible for LASIK, SMILE and ICL, and why do you recommend one?
    3. How much tissue would laser remove, and what would remain?
    4. For ICL: what are my anterior chamber depth and endothelial count?
    5. What follow-up schedule do you recommend, including long-term checks?

    Clear answers

    Questions families ask

What is the maximum power for LASIK?

There is no single cut-off. It depends on corneal thickness and shape. Your topography and pachymetry decide.

Is ICL safer than LASIK for high power?

For high powers or thin corneas, ICL is often the safer choice because it doesn't remove corneal tissue. It is intraocular surgery, so it has its own risks, which your surgeon should explain.

Is SMILE better for high myopia?

SMILE treats myopia within its eligibility range. For very high powers, ICL may be recommended instead.

    Can ICL be removed?

Yes, the lens can be removed or exchanged if needed.
