Most people in Mumbai who are considering LASIK ask the same practical questions. How many days off do I need? When can I look at a screen? Is the local train okay? What about the monsoon? Here is what recovery usually looks like, and how to plan it around city life.
Recovery varies from person to person and by procedure (LASIK, SMILE or PRK). Always follow your surgeon's instructions.
Day 0: the day of surgery
- The procedure itself is quick, usually minutes per eye.
- Afterwards, eyes are typically watery, gritty and sensitive to light for a few hours.
- Plan: have someone take you home. Don't drive. Rest or sleep with your eyes closed, and use the prescribed drops on schedule.
- Wear the protective shields as advised, especially while sleeping.
Day 1: the first check-up
Many people wake up seeing much more clearly. Vision may still be slightly hazy.
There is a review the next day. Factor in Mumbai travel time when you choose the hospital.
Avoid rubbing your eyes, even if they itch.
Days 2–7: back to work, carefully
Many desk-based professionals return to work in 2–3 days, but check with your surgeon.
Screens: use the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds), keep lubricating drops at your desk, and lower screen brightness.
Commute: local trains, autos and roads mean dust and wind. Wear wraparound sunglasses, and avoid touching your eyes with hands that have held railings or phones.
Avoid: swimming, eye make-up, steam rooms, and contact sports.
Weeks 2–4: settling
Vision continues to sharpen and stabilise.
Dry eyes are common at this stage, especially with long hours in air-conditioned offices. Keep using lubricants as advised.
Night glare or halos around lights while driving are common early on and usually improve over time.
The gym is usually fine after the first week or so; ask your surgeon before swimming.
Months 1–3: full stability
Most people have stable vision by 3 months, though dryness can take longer to settle completely.
Keep your follow-up appointments. They matter even when you feel fine.

Mumbai-specific tips
Monsoon: avoid getting rainwater or puddle splashes in your eyes in the first few weeks. Carry sunglasses, even on cloudy days, as a shield. If you can, plan surgery outside the peak monsoon weeks.
Dust and construction: Mumbai's ongoing construction means fine dust. Wraparound sunglasses help a lot in the first couple of weeks.
AC offices: air-conditioning dries the eyes. Sit away from the direct airflow, and use drops regularly.
Long commutes: carry your drops, and a clean tissue for tears. Don't rub.
When to call your doctor urgently
Contact your eye doctor promptly if you notice:
- increasing pain rather than improving discomfort
- a sudden drop in vision
- marked redness or discharge
- any injury to the eye.
Planning your leave
A simple plan many Mumbai professionals use:
- surgery on a Thursday or Friday
- rest over the weekend
- work from home on Monday if possible
- back to the office mid-week.

Limited use is usually fine after the first day. Take frequent breaks and use lubricating drops.
When can I travel by local train after LASIK?
Usually within a few days, with sunglasses for protection from dust and wind. Avoid touching your eyes.
Is LASIK recovery different for SMILE?
SMILE recovery is broadly similar, though some people notice slightly slower sharpening of vision in the first days. PRK recovery is slower and more uncomfortable for the first week.
