Is LASIK Covered by Health Insurance in India?

Learn how LASIK policy clauses, power thresholds and exclusions affect cover. Ask Wekure Health to review your documents before confirming eligibility.

    Read the guide

The answer to whether LASIK is covered by health insurance in India depends on the policy, not a universal yes or no. Some policies provide refractive-surgery cover above a defined power threshold or under specific clauses. Others exclude it. A cashless hospital list or an insurance card cannot answer that question on its own.

Wekure Health reviews the patient's insurance documents and clauses and confirms cashless eligibility before surgery. This guide explains how to prepare for that review without promising approval. It also covers the difference between a clinical recommendation, a policy benefit and a hospital's estimate, so a patient can make a financial plan before admission.

Why a blanket statement about LASIK cover is misleading

Health policies differ in their definitions, exclusions, exceptions and benefit conditions. A refractive-surgery clause may refer to a prescription threshold, specified medical circumstances or other requirements. That wording must be read with the schedule and any endorsements. A statement that LASIK is always covered ignores exclusions; a statement that it is never covered ignores policies with relevant benefits or exceptions.

The procedure name is not the only consideration. Eligibility may also depend on who is insured, the active policy period, waiting periods and other applicable conditions. A premium payment does not establish that every planned eye procedure is covered. Ask for the exact clause being relied on and how it relates to the clinical documents. An informed conversation should make uncertainty explicit until the insurer's decision is available.

Collect the wording, schedule and clinical information

Start with the full policy wording and current schedule, not only a brochure or a screenshot of a benefit summary. Include endorsements or employer documents that alter the standard terms. For a corporate policy, confirm that the patient is an enrolled member and that the documents relate to the current cover. The employee's or dependent's name needs to match the records used for the approval request.

The clinical team may need the prescription, examination findings and advice about the proposed treatment. Share previous reports when requested so the review does not depend on an informal description of eye power. Use the agreed channel for sensitive documents and ask what information is actually needed. Wekure helps organise the review and paperwork, but the platform does not replace the insurer's interpretation or the surgeon's assessment.

Read a power-threshold clause exactly as written

If the policy mentions a refractive-power threshold, do not assume every insurer uses the same number or measurement. Check whether the clause defines the relevant prescription, how the value is calculated and whether the condition concerns a particular eye or the proposed procedure. The wording may need clarification from the insurer. This article deliberately does not publish a universal threshold or use one to declare a patient eligible.

A threshold is not a suggestion to change a prescription or select an operation only to obtain a benefit. Clinical records must be accurate, and the treating team determines what is medically appropriate. Ask which reports support the request and whether additional conditions accompany the exception. A single apparently favourable line should not be read separately from an exclusion, waiting period or endorsement elsewhere in the policy.

Check exclusions and the exact treatment being proposed

Read the sections covering refractive error, vision correction, elective procedures and any related exceptions. A policy may exclude a procedure unless defined circumstances apply. If the wording appears inconsistent, request clarification rather than selecting the most favourable sentence. Wekure reviews documents and clauses first; the insurer confirms whether the requested benefit applies. No care-platform enquiry or package discussion is a substitute for that decision.

Ask whether the proposed technique is described as LASIK, topography-guided correction, SMILE or an implant procedure such as ICL in the clinical estimate. Do not assume that a clause or initial approval for one automatically covers another. ICL can also have policy-dependent cover, but its implant and treatment details must be assessed explicitly. A hospital being in-network helps with a possible cashless process; it does not create a benefit missing from the policy.

    Do you have health insurance?

Insurance benefits depend on your policy and insurer approval.

Move from document review to a confirmed financial plan

The practical sequence begins with clinical assessment and a proposed treatment plan. Wekure helps review the policy documents, organise the requested reports and coordinate the hospital's pre-authorisation process where appropriate. The insurer may approve the request, ask for more information, limit the payable amount or decline it under the policy. Ask the team to distinguish these states clearly instead of describing a pending request as approved.

Before admission, obtain clarity about the approved procedure, amount and any remaining conditions. Approval can still leave a patient contribution for excluded or non-payable items. The discharge and final-claim process follows the applicable policy and hospital arrangements. If the proposed treatment or estimate changes, ask whether further insurer review is needed. Do not assume an earlier discussion automatically applies to a different clinical plan.

Cashless and reimbursement are payment routes, not promises of cover

In a cashless arrangement, the approved benefit is handled through the insurer and hospital under the relevant process, with any patient contribution clarified separately. In reimbursement, the patient pays and later submits the required documents for assessment. Neither route removes exclusions or makes a non-covered procedure payable. Do not accept advice to pay first on the assumption that reimbursement must succeed even when the policy position is unclear.

Ask what records will be required, how the hospital handles the approval or billing process and whom to contact with insurer queries. Keep copies of the estimate, clinical advice, approval correspondence and final documents provided to you. Wekure can help with coordination and explanations, but cannot guarantee that an insurer will accept a claim. If an answer is uncertain, request written clarification before making a financial commitment.

Understand the estimate and the EMI alternative

The indicative LASIK range is ₹40,000 – ₹1,20,000, depending on the technique and package. Standard LASIK, topography-guided options such as Contoura and SMILE can occupy different relative bands; a named method does not have a universal fixed price. Ask for a written estimate stating the eye basis and the inclusions. ICL needs a separate quotation and should not be assigned the LASIK range.

If the policy does not cover the proposed procedure or leaves a balance, eligible applicants can ask about zero-cost EMI. Lender approval and disclosed finance terms apply. Read the repayment conditions before accepting a plan; financing does not make treatment free or change the insurer's decision. Clinical suitability comes first, so a lower monthly payment should not be the reason to choose an otherwise unsuitable procedure.

Keep cataract cover separate and know Wekure's role

Cataract removes a cloudy natural lens, while LASIK and ICL address refractive correction through different approaches. Cataract is cashless with most health insurance and corporate employee plans, subject to policy terms, sub-limits, room-rent limits, waiting periods and insurer approval. Its indicative price is ₹20,000 – ₹1,50,000 per eye. Those cataract facts must not be used as automatic LASIK or ICL benefits.

Your surgery is performed by experienced eye surgeons at our NABH-accredited partner hospitals. Wekure Health manages your consultation, insurance, hospital booking and follow-up care. It offers a free consultation or eligibility check, free surgery-day pick-up and drop and free follow-ups, with arrangements confirmed individually. Use the linked cataract hub, city pages, cost and insurance guides for the separate cataract pathway. Office enquiries at Plot 90, Sector 44, Gurugram are handled Mon–Fri, 10 AM–8 PM; the clinical venue is confirmed separately.

    Clear answers

    Questions families ask

Is LASIK covered by every health insurance policy?

No. Some policies provide cover under defined clauses or power thresholds, while others exclude refractive surgery. Wekure reviews the patient's documents and clauses and confirms cashless eligibility before surgery. A benefit summary, active insurance card or network-hospital listing alone does not establish approval for the proposed operation.

What power threshold makes LASIK eligible?

There is no universal threshold given in this guide. Read the exact policy definition and ask what clinical measurement or report the insurer requires. Other conditions may still apply. Do not interpret a prescription number in isolation or change accurate medical information to try to qualify for a benefit.

Can corporate insurance have different refractive-surgery terms?

Yes, the relevant group policy and endorsements may differ from a personal plan or a standard brochure. Confirm current membership and obtain the applicable documents. Wekure can help review them and coordinate questions, but the employer's general benefit description is not itself the insurer's approval of a particular surgery.

Does LASIK approval also cover ICL?

Not automatically. ICL is a different treatment with an implant and requires an appropriate clinical estimate and policy review. Ask whether the wording and approval specifically address the proposed procedure. Wekure checks documents before confirming eligibility; a favourable discussion about LASIK should not be treated as a blanket approval.

Can I pay and claim reimbursement if cashless is declined?

A decline needs to be understood first. Reimbursement does not override a policy exclusion or establish entitlement. Ask the insurer for the reason and the applicable process before paying on an assumption. Keep the relevant documents, but do not treat their submission as a guarantee of a successful claim.

What can I do if the treatment is not covered?

Ask for the written clinical estimate and consider the available payment options without rushing the medical decision. LASIK has an indicative range of ₹40,000 – ₹1,20,000. Eligible applicants may explore zero-cost EMI subject to lender approval and terms; ICL requires its own quotation and neither option is an insurance guarantee.

For information only; final advice comes from your eye surgeon after examination.
